Georgia On My Mind

Updated: Jan 8, 2020

Savannah – Georgia’s first city.

I absolutely adore Savannah. Established in 1733, it’s the oldest city in the state of Georgia. There is much to love about this fascinating place. The food, the history, the Southern charm. Savannah will always have a place in my heart.

Why Savannah?

In 2005, my husband and I traveled to this southern getaway to celebrate our fourth wedding anniversary. Why Savannah? As stated in another blog, this was another first for him. Considering I’d moved to Georgia in the early 90s, Savannah was very familiar to me.

Earlier that year, Larry and I were geographically separated. What??? Let me explain. I was a warrior citizen serving part-time in the Army Reserves. In 2005, I received notification that my part time status would become full time. My assignment was in Texas for a duration of 18 months. The position was unaccompanied which meant he was staying in Georgia while I relocated to a new state. This totally changed my life, our lives for that matter. Not just the separation but the experience that followed. That however, is another story and a different chapter. For now, we’ll stick with traveling.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch –

As our anniversary approached, we were both anxious to spend time together. Since Savannah was less than four hours from our house, we opted to drive. I flew home and we hit the road the next day. For those few hours, we talked as if there was no tomorrow. Funny, we basically talked everyday over the phone yet, there was still so much to say.

Once there, we stayed at a hotel fairly close to downtown. With a full itinerary and a small amount of time, our journey began. For the next three days, we would enjoy:

  1. Savannah’s River Street

  2. Old Town Trolley tour

  3. Walking city tour including Forest Gump bench

  4. Several parks and museums

  5. The Mercer House – Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

  6. Savannah Riverboat Cruise

  7. “Candler Oak” – one the oldest living trees in the city

Famous Restaurants

One disclaimer: We did not eat at The Lady and Sons. We attempted to however, the line was literally down the street when we arrived. Let Larry tell it, the line was wrapped around the building. After 20 minutes and not much movement, we left.

Where did we eat? So glad you asked. We ended up at Clary’s Café. Although this southern gem has an abundance of restaurants, this is one of my favorites. I initially found this breakfast spot during my first visit to Savannah years before. One of the tours had a drop off right in front and I’ve been eating there ever since. Clary’s is definitely a staple of the city.

The night of our anniversary, we purchased the Riverboat package. Dinner, entertainment and a river tour made for a fantastic two hour cruise. Although the boat was slightly dated, I recall the seafood was fresh and delicious. The added on extras with a bottle of wine and cake made for a very nice evening.

Very historic.

As you can see, we made the most of our getaway. Savannah is a place to visit over and over again. There is a lot of history and the tours offer so much insight. We learned about the First African Baptist Church, the twenty-plus park squares in the historic district and gained knowledge about Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts of the USA. Even seeing the architectural designs and beautiful homes, this city leaves you wanting more and more. Let’s not forget to mention the fountain at Forsyth Park; a true beauty. And the honorable mention – Live music at Jazz’d.

Nice jazz music.

My husband and I really enjoy contemporary jazz music, aka smooth jazz. We looked up things to do and came across Jazz’d. It’s more of a lounge atmosphere than a typical bar. Located in Ellis Square, this establishment is basically below street level. The sign is up top but the entrance is downstairs. Very cute concept. Sophisticated and classy; the music, cocktails and people were definitely for the grown and sexy. We had a wonderful time. The band played smooth jazz sets all night long. Mind you, this was years ago. The last time we were in Savannah, Jazz’d was still going strong. The décor was on point. However, we went on blues night which wasn’t quite our cup of tea. Next time, we’ll check the schedule.

Plenty to see and do.

Savannah has plenty to offer for everyone, especially on River Street. I think we may have spent one day wandering through all the shops, stores and boutiques on this strip. My favorite is the Peanut Shop. It’s a must… unless you’re allergic. Sampling the different varieties makes you want to purchase the whole store! The wasabi peanuts always have a way of calling my name. Oooooo and Savannah’s Candy Kitchen – stay away from the pralines or you’ll be HOOKED. Trust me, I spend money there almost every time. You know, just writing this blog is making me hungry!! Ha-Ha

So full of heart and soul, Savannah will literally have you singing the classic, “Georgia, on My Mind.”
